It's been well reported here, but not for nearly a year and I'd heard a rumour from a local that they had finally started knocking it down, so thought I'd do an update as my first report. Explored with non-members Eeka, Tash and Oli.
It opened in 1862 and closed in 2003.
Developers applied for planning permission to convert the hospital into student accommodation in 2007 but Charnwood Council refused saying "The re-use or conversion.......would not contribute to the proper planning of the area".
In 2011 permission was granted to clear the entire site back to concrete pads and foundations. The local paper reports that "the listed building at 54 Baxter Gate will be retained", but the main hospital building is 55. O'Brien Demolition expect to have completed the job by the end of June.
By the time we reached the roof it was chucking it down so we didn't hang around.
Thanks for looking.
