This Grade II-listed building dates from 1876 with alterations in 1899 and was designed in gothic style in pink granite from Matlock by F.W. Waller of Waller & Son of Gloucester. It was officially opened on as a college on 19th January 1899 by the Duke of Devonshire. It originally housed the Municipal Technical College but later became The Derby College of Art – and more recently named the ‘College of Art Annexe’ by Derby Uni. The college housed its own art house cinema "The Metro" from 1981-2006. The Metro cinema moved into its new home at the 2-screen Quad opposite the Assembly Rooms in 2008. The building stood empty and unused until it was re-opened in December 2012 as a theatre rehearsal space for Derby Theatre. How long it’s sat empty since then I cannot say.
An old shot from the 60's
My visit
Ground floor
First floor - Metro Cinema
Projector room - interesting to look in with lots of movie memorabilia but hard to shoot here due to it not being big enough to swing a field mouse
And some more bits & bobs from the upper floors
And finally a bit of fun on the roof with the worlds most rotten scaff boards
Thanks for looking!
