North Eastern Railway Headquarters. Also know as The British Rail building or just BRB.York
Built around 1900, and taking 6 years to complete. It's a spectacular red brick and white stone building with dutch style gables. Inside it has grand marble pillars and floors.
It has recently closed after being the HQ for northern rail operations for over a hundred years. I think it is to be redeveloped into a hotel.
I had the good fortune to get inside during the period between closure and redevelopment. I understand that the developers move in next week...
Anyway here they are:
Taken from the city walls.
Main entrance. (not the way I went in!)
Reception
Stairs to first floor.
First floor landing.
Some of the original plans are on the walls. This is for the weather vane.
One of the back stairwells
