During the Cold War, the Warsaw Pact prepared for a nuclear attack on Europe, In 1960, exercises were held in conditions similar to warfare, their aim was to test methods of transporting nuclear weapons from the USSR to the territories of western Poland to the strike units. Several methods of transporting warheads were tried, but none of them proved effective enough, The decision was made that the nuclear warheads would have to be stored in Poland.
An agreement was reached between Poland and Russia to build 3 nuclear warhead storage facilities in Poland. Each of these sites contained 2 bunkers with large storage bays for the warheads and a networks of rooms on the opposite side for the control systems and living facilities. The bunkers contained monitoring equipment to monitor the condition of the warheads, climate control systems to ensure a constant temperature, water supply systems, generators and all the required facilities for the crew stationed there.
The facility was manned by Russian soldiers and spetsnaz units, the bunker airlocks could only be opened after communication with Moscow. According to soldiers stationed at the site enough warheads were stored at each facility to execute the Europe nuclear attack plan if required.
This particular facility is located in some woodland near the village of Templewo, both bunkers have been stripped but some features remain. Efforts have been made to backfill the bunker entrances but these have been dug out at some point to allow small gaps to squeeze through. The two bunkers on site are exact copies, access to the lower levels are a bit dodgy as the original ladders are gone and people have created improvised wooden ladders and steps from tree stumps and bits of wood but it's easy enough. It's quite eerie to stand in the storage bays knowing what their contents used to be!
