The Fireplace Showroom was a former train carriage repair workshop and is the last remaining building from the Chaddesden Sidings which was a marshaling yard for transportation of goods.
The building has stood for more than 150 years and is due to be demolished to make way for an M&S, Nandos and Starbucks. Many locals believe the building should be retained, arguing it's a proud part of Derby's railway heritage.
Pictured below in 1987 (with a lovely mk5 Cortina)
It was later used as a fireplace showroom and closed in early 2016. There wasn't a great deal to see, but I managed to look past the immense chav damage and thoroughly enjoyed learning a few things about my home city's past while researching it.
I had to use monochrome on my externals due to an annoying lens flair
Sadly the place was destroyed inside. What was once the front desk:
Perfect place to dump a burned-out moped(?)
The last entry in this diary was Christmas eve 2015, which just about adds up with the showrooms closure
Absolutely tonnes of catalogues in the store room still (mostly over the floor)
I was particularly taken with the range of Stovax horseshoe inserts :
The first stop of the day had been at the closed Toys R Us (fail) and I could feel it mocking me through a hole in the wall
And a few miscellaneous bits
Shame about the vandalism but was glad to see inside a little part of Derby's (soon to be gone) history before it's too late.
