Report - Victoria Dock Clock Tower Jan 08

Stop off at the Hydraulic tower but no access... so it was on to another handsome tower, the clock tower at Viccie dock. I have been in awe of this ever since I laid eyes on it, and the inside was no disappointment either!
I cannot get my head around what has happened to it's bell, it has sheared around the crown, but how?? And how did it not take the floors with it??!!
The views of the docks and a mersey sunset was just stunning...

The bell was cast by Mears and Stainbank in 1892 and looking by the size of the clapper on a previous picture would have weighed in about 5cwt (1/4 of a ton in todays money). The firm also did the bells for Liverpool cathedral (heaviest peal of bells in the world)

I presume it was cut off but someone would have made a cracking noise doing it - much simpler to remove it from the headstock and lower it silently down the tower.
