The Wheatley tunnel is 819 yds long,
forming part of the great northern railway spur between Holmfield (north) & St Pauls (south).
The south portal lies in a steep cutting with a retaining wall on the left side,
is in average condition with a brick wall & a twin access door.
There's 1 air shaft (capped) mid way through the tunnel,
there's refuges on both sides of the tunnel some been blocked with concrete blocks.
The roof & the walls are made of brick,
the floor is water & debris free except the chimney remains beneath the airshaft.
The north portal is buried, nothing remains of it at street level except an emergency hatch.
The tunnel opened 1st August 1890 (freight) & 5th September 1890 (passengers),
closed 31st December 1916 (passengers) & 25th June 1960 (freight).
There's emergency access, via ladders at the north of the tunnel.
