The Abbey of Thelema was a spiritual and magical commune founded by Aleister Crowley and Leah Hirsig in 1920 in Cefalù, Sicily, Italy. Crowley envisioned it as a center for practicing Thelema, his esoteric philosophy based on the principle "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law". The villa served as a temple and a place for rituals, meditation, and study of Crowley's teachings.
The Abbey's walls were adorned with murals painted by Crowley, many of which were erotic and surreal. However, the commune faced controversy, and Crowley was expelled from Italy in 1923 by Mussolini. The villa fell into disrepair, and most of the murals were destroyed or covered over. The drinking of blood here was meant to have been the cause of death of one of the followers.
People still come from all over the world, to what is a very unassuming building. The history of this explore is much more interesting then the explore. This is the 3rd abandoned building that I know of associated with Crowley. Is this a record for an individual? Or do you know someone associated with more? We did attempt the Abramelin, but we didn;t have time.
