Hi folks. Bit of a random one but I'm quite interested in the idea of making some scale models of asylums. As a reference or for inspiration, I was wondering if anyone has any 3D virtual models of any of the asylums or their buildings, or knows of any? The only thing I've come across like this was a model of Cefn Coed which is awesome, but costs something like 400 quid to 3D print.

Cheers :)

Not a thing I'd ever thought about but have you checked sites such as Sketchfab to see if anyone has done any photogrametry of them?
Good shout! Did find a model of Talgarth on there which is nice.

I wonder if you could buy and 3D print this somehow?

This is the one I was looking at. Its really nice but it was looking at about 200-400 quid to print!

They offer it to download in sections to print, but it seems super expensive to do.

The only one I know about is Steve's one of Cefn which he was doing as part of the closing exhibition. He was lucky in that he could full access to the site and I also worked with him to identify the size/shapes of the airing courts which were long gone (although you can see the footprint of them on aerial maps still). Unfortunately most others were demo'd/redeveloped before this sort of tech was common.

Talgarth one is cool, shame its post complete ruin/missing the kitchens and corridors that the buffoons who owned it knocked down.

I do games development and design at college including a lot of 3D modelling, if you’d like I can try make one for you as a reference? May take some time but it could be a good chance for me to get better at CAD too

Steve's model is great but I just don't really know what an economical way to make it would be. I think someone said to me it would probably be cheaper to buy a 3d printer and make it oneself than have it ordered, although that also wasn't cheap!

Interesting, I appreciate the offer! As much as I'd like to see it I wouldnt want you sweating it out to make one for me. I think for now my plan is gonna be to just try and make a physical model from scratch and maybe eventually I'll shell out to get the Cefn Coed model printed

I assume you mean its expensive to print because he's charging a fortune to sell the file rather than its actually expensive to print!?

Nah the file is free to download as part of that Cefn Coed memorial project. It's just 3d printing seems to cost a fortune to have done for you

I guess it depends what scale you want to print it at! Id happily knock it out a basic print of it if you want!
That would be brilliant if you wouldn't mind, obviously I'll give you something for it. Scale wise I'm sort of thinking around a total width of somewhere around 70cm to a metre, but where I'm not clued up on 3d models I don't know what size the original files are. I can try and have a look though and get an idea of scale
