Beech Leisure Centre
The Beach Leisure Centre was a leisure centre located in Aberdeen, Scotland formerly operated by Sport Aberdeen. The building first opened in 1989 and closed on 16 April 2023 alongside Bucksburn Swimming Pool after a £687,000 reduction in funding by Aberdeen City Council, following the closure of the leisure pool on 21 August 2022 due to an increase in energy costs. It was situated adjacent to Linx Ice Arena and Aberdeen Beach Ballroom, a category B listed building. The Beach Leisure Centre is set to be demolished as part of the £150m City Centre/Beach Masterplan.
'Deen, deen, deen' chants the small, unfit Ford Fiesta as Travis Scott's 'Fein' begins it's eighth rendition. On a short trip to Aberdeen in November, the first time I'd been up that north since February 2020, we had two destinations in mind. Arguably the best industrial place that had come out of the UK in the last couple years, Stoneywood Mill, and a small coastal leisure centre which ticked the baths checklist of having natural light and not being ran through at all. The paper mill was a real treat, all credit to @Terminal Decline but the leisure centre proved a fortress. Not helped by the active ice rink which had skaters gliding through all night on one side, and the active ballroom, also connected to the baths on the other side, also packed with people, it would take a very late visit to crack Beech, and an early return the next day to get it covered. Visited with @DustySensorPhotography @jtza and Alex. Oh, and it was alarmed to fuck so I doubt it's doable now, also noting that demolition was due to start last Summer!
The main pool was relatively nice, what we expected anyway. Having closed earlier in the year, and with the rumble fences surrounding it, it was pretty darn immaculate. Photogenic enough, though.
