up early 5.30 ( thats dedication on a sunday ) on the bike to get out to Ashbourne before 8 to check out a potential new culvert under the bus station at Ashbourne, lovely sunny morning great riding conditions had checked on maps and was alerted to a possible culvert but also came with a plan B in case it was a no show as its a good hours ride ( and longer if you take the scenic route ) getting parked up and gaining access was no problem the infall is at the edge of Ashbourne park were the Henmore brook goes under the A515
twin concrete box section given the newness of the bus station and surrounding shops i was hardly taken by surprise, well nothing ventured and all that in i went
well at least it was clean if featureless
looking back to start it then bent around
end in sight already only 221 meters long
the bridge pub on the bridge at Ashbourne
the 2 box sections diddnt meet up so i jumped over the concrete dividing wall and walked the left hand one back to the start same as the right one only a slightly lower roof height , not putting any more pics up of that as i think you get the idea , well that was a bit disappointing time to activate plan B
A quick blast down to derby to check out Boredomiser after getting parked up it was an easy one to access
start point then view downstream
looking back to start
change in styles to corrugated iron roof
change in styles to spraycrete and spiders
concrete arched roof after a time it split in to two halves i kept left
it now bent around then came back to one big box section
back to 2 sections again
you can see the sun light nearly at the outfall
was a long one ! going back this time up the other tunnel there was another tunnel carrying a sewer pipe that came in had seen this earlier and now after getting to the end i had a quick nosy at it
there was a lot mist around the start surprised the photo came out as good ! lol if you look closely you can see the water droplets on the concrete roof
yes i woz ere to
diddnt go on a lot further past this point was getting a bit pushed for time and its quite a walk back and ride home so called it quits the tunnel was getting smaller and it diddnt smell like a rose garden lol
returning back to the main culvert i then started walking back upstream there was quite a flow and was a bit harder than i thought ,there were a fair few fish and ive never seen as many crayfish in a culvert before
not sure what these were and i would be grateful for suggestions or an answer there were about 3 of them along the length of the drain they looked like manhole lids with a hinge on them im guessing that maybe theres another rcp underneath that originally drained the water while they were concreting the culvert floor ?
back to the start , well thats it and thanks for viewing
