The company is Britain’s largest manufacturer of specialist trolleys and handling equipment, a position they’ve held for the last 10 years. Part of the market-leading Clares Equipment Group, Clares Merchandise Handling Equipment was based at Wells in Somerset and was originally founded in 1966. From modest beginnings, the site has grown to 250,000 square feet, giving it the capacity to produce high-quality products in large numbers. It once employed around 250 people and had a £22 million turnover.
Clares also boasted one of the largest in-house zinc-plating plants in Europe. “It allowed them to produce the best quality zinc-coated products on the market, Zinc is environmentally protective, stops the product from rusting, and looks externally attractive from the customer’s point of view - the roll cages can be gold or silver rather than dull metal.
