Made several visits to this school that is situated in the middle of a town centre. I am surprised it’s not really been done more. My mate dauntless spotted it and went in and told me. I had known about it for several years and just wrote it off as totally trashed. Turns out it was not really trashed, just mainly the gym and corrugated building what the kids had managed to get in. Told my friends V50jake and Dangas so they could get to it. It was a nice relaxed visit on my various visits.
Nicholas Hamond by will in 1724 a thousand pounds towards a new school in the town. Five hundred was to be used erecting a school house, and five hundred for instructing boys in reading, writing and arithmetic. The school opened in 1736 on the campinglands after a signature and seal by the new charter of trustees of the new educational board. In 1896 the school moved from its original site and into the former Norwich and Swaffham Bank (days). The new school opened with a house for 32 boarders, new classrooms and chemical and physical classes and a gymnasium. By 1922 the school had 130 boys and thirty boarders. More buildings were added later on including a new gymnasium block with science and art class above In the 1930’s. The school merged with the local secondary modern school, the old site became a sixth form centre. In July 2009 and a new sixth form was built. The single site school was relaunched as the Swaffham Hamonds HIgh School, a community comprehensive school. In 2011 the trust applied for conversion into 14 dwellings. Obviously nothing came of that because in 2013 it had an antiques centre use the premises, sadly this was short lived and the school has remained derelict since with several plans having been tried.
So starting off with one set of the listed gates.
Looking across to smaller building of the three.
Starting off in this building. It goes further to the right of the more modern looking bit.
The main foyer and stairs.
Was not much to see up top. One big room that kids had got in.
The kitchen area from the school. Painted bright red I guess by the antiques shop.
A rather nice classroom. Nice to get away from the bright red.
Going up to another upstairs area.
It leads to another set of stairs, actually a double stairs with one on each side. This leads to a large attic area.
Was quite a bit of original graffiti up here from former pupils.
A set up room which I think was maybe for workers from the antique centre.
These brown tiles featured a fair bit throughout the school.
Lots of nice fireplaces around. I particularly liked this one.
Outside was a large long corrugated building. This houses several classrooms. Sadly they were in a real state. One room was in reasonable condition.
Small boiler house.
At the rear was a nice original outdoor toilet block.
