HM Prison Gloucester was a Category B men's prison in Gloucester England.
It was originally opened in 1792 as a county jail. The prison was from Her Majesty's Prison Service operated and closed in 2013.
In 1840 it was substantially remodeled and given flanking brick wings. In 1971, a new wing for juvenile offenders was built in the prison.
In 1987, further improvements were made including a new gate, administration building and visitor center.
In April 2003, Gloucester was named in a survey as "one of the top 20 most overcrowded prisons" in the United Kingdom.
The following day, the prison was the scene of a three-and-a-half-hour siege when two prisoners barricaded themselves in a cell to protest visitation rights.
In June 2007, the Independent Monitoring Board criticized the prison for overcrowding, poor nutrition and cramped cells.
A month later, over 100 prisoners had to be moved to other prisons after severe flooding in the area inundated the prison's ground floor and affected water supplies.
In August 2007, the prison was criticized by Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Prisons after an inspection report stated that the level of organized activities for inmates at Gloucester(e.g. training and education) was "deplorable".
The report also said one wing of the prison should be renovated. However, due to its good management, the prison was described as “very positive” overall.
On 10 January 2013, Justice Secretary Chris Grayling announced that the prison was one of seven in England to be closed.
The prison officially closed on March 31, 2013. The prison grounds are due to be redeveloped, but a number of executed criminals are buried in unmarked graves beneath the prison.
A total of 105 people, including 6 women, were executed here. Until the beginning of the 19th century, these executions took place in public.
