Kent Hill Gravel Mine, Audley, Staffordshire - June 2024

‘First documentation of both surface and underground workings appeared on the 1946 OS map, although small-scale extraction had been happening since the 1920s. The gravel was processed on-site and sold primarily to the Water Board for infrastructure projects. Quarry operations ceased at the end of WW2, and the site was sold to the Potteries Water Board around 1950, with significant clearing and infilling operations following.

The quarry covers approximately 3250 square meters, divided into 3 levels.’

@raisinwing and I had both fancied a look here for a while, so one summers’ morning we set off and had a shufty.

Overall, a nice clean example of pillar and stall workings - if a little samey.

Was on my to do list for around fifteen years or more, so nice to finally have gotten it done.

Excellent snaps as usual.
