Littlebrook D Power Station
Another urbex first, and one of my favourites this one
Littlebrook is on the Large Combustion Plant Directive (LCPD) opt out list
At the time we visited the station was still connected to the grid and in commercial operation as it continued to wind down it's remaining 10,000 hours of electricity production
The site was one of a number of stations throughout the UK with black-start capabilities
Meaning that it's able to start generating without an external power supply
At it's peak, the 3 turbines were capable of synchronising and ramping up to full load in under five minutes
Allowing them to generate at the request of National Grid Company to deal with short-term peaks in demand
At the time we visited, only 1 of the 3 generators was in commercial use
As one had been mothballed in the 90's and put on economic reserve the other being stripped for parts
Things may well be different now as this was over 12 months ago
Littlebrook was originally scheduled to close in Dec 2015,
but is now closing 9 months early (March 31st) due to financial strain
So, I'd been busy with work and not had time to get to Belgium, so thought I'd see what was on the doorstep as a compromise
Props to Gaj/Keitei for another comedy instalment of powah
It was a pleasure to step foot inside this industrial giant as we were greeted by the sounds of Turb0n
If our run of not been busted was to be broken, this place was sure gonna be it after a few close shaves at Tilbury
I decided to fetch the dslr out on this one in order for some better pics than I'd previously walked away with
Still it's not just about the pictures with these places for me, it's more poking about and having the opportunity to savour a few moments of our remaining industrial 'eritage that sadly won't be around for much longer
As usual we headed up high within the safety of the boiler house to assess the situation
We then worked our way back down and through into the turbine hall
It was a bit of a convoluted mission, but equally worth the associated fuss
Eventually we managed a safe glimpse of a distant turbine hall
We climbed down and across anything we could get our hands and feet on to avoid being spotted on the gantry's until we hit the upper reaches of the turbine hall
Stripped Turbine
At this point we were on the less lively decommissioned side of the station, so thought it safe to climb onto the gantry crane for a butchers
Enough pissballing about amongst the derp,
we were now more interested in the live stuff at the other end of the hall
Problem was, on the way down/across we had to negotiate some fairly well lit spaces that served the switchgear and control rooms and associated gubbins; it was a bit tense
We made our way over and climbed across one of the I beams above the turbine hall and grabbed a few pics before calling it a night (day)
Sounds Grand

Construction started on Littlebrook Power Station in 1976 by the cleveland Bridge Company for the then C.E.G.B
It was instrumental in helping to power the city of London for many years
It holds the record for the largest electricity production output of any 2,000MW station in the UK in any one year
This record generation was during its operational time as a three unit station in the UK miners’ strike
More recently, the station has played an important role in providing electricity during times of peak demand
Littlebrook is the last major non gas-fired power station to close in the Greater London area
