Monckton Coke Works.

2015-01-01_0028_zps08a61781.jpg

Coke was made on the Monckton site at Royston near Barnsley in South Yorkshire for over 130 years. There are 42 ovens, which were fed by coal, presumably from the nearby Maltby colliery that has also recently shut up shop.

The works at Monckton were the only independent coke manufacturer in the UK, and was ranked as one of Europe’s leading producers of high-quality metallurgical coke.

Spotted this lead pop up on here a couple of weeks ago following the news of the site’s closure, so popped along solo for a little nose around. A nice way to welcome in the new year.

There is definitely more to this site but it is fairly exposed with security and cameras on site, I didn’t want to push my luck too much so just checked out the ovens and some of the associated quenching and conveyor gubbins.

Here are some snapshots.

Nicely done mate, as per :thumb

What a difference a day makes, it still had snow on it yesterday.

Think Secca are gonna be pretty active considering what"s stood around. Surprised there were no Transits outside TBH ;)

Awesome man. There might be a turbine or two knocking about somewhere there, configured as exhausters for the ovens. Certainly was once the case at CWM.

Cheers boba, there's a very modern CHP plant on the site that used some of the siphoned gas for power. Not sure how interesting it'll be though.
