Newton Bonar Factory
Bonar Yarns was founded in 1903 as part of the Low & Bonar business, which specialized in technical textiles. The company was based at Caldrum Works on St Salvador Street in Dundee. Bonar Yarns made advanced polypropylene yarns for a variety of markets, including carpets, floor coverings, sports pitches, and artificial sports turf. Bonar Yarns faced several challenges, including cash flow difficulties, energy costs, and unsustainability. In April 2023, Bonar Yarns collapsed into administration due to cash flow issues. the administrators sold Bonar Yarns to Newman Yarns, a new company founded by former customer Elite Turf USA. Newman Yarns invested £1 million into the Dundee business. In October 2023, Bonar Yarns entered administration for the second time in six months and closed for good.
What could've been. Sadly, as excited as we were to come across this article, they didn't waste any time selling off all types of machinery, and there was hardly anything of interest remaining. Figured I'd stick a report up to prevent anyone else from going. Visited on our Scotland trip with @DustySensorPhotography @jtza and Alex.
The majority of the factory consisted of vast production halls with nothing left.
Last bits of stock.
There was a few dying hopes for admin, but ultimately, it had been modernised enough to avoid interest.
Lab.
