Report - Nott's Industries Ltd Factory, Frome. March 2025

It's been a while since I've been properly out & about; a fractured fibula took me out of action for a few weeks. Today I eased myself back into exploring by having a mooch round the Notts Industries site.

HISTORY

A bit of history that I've gleaned from the Frome Museum website.

The site was a silk mill that was bought in 1923 by J.H. Nott & Sons Ltd of Swansea. It became Nott's Industries and manufactured life floats and buoyant apparatus. During WW2 over 11,000 floats were produced for the British Admiralty alone.

In 1938 the company developed its engineering side, dealing in sheet metal pressing. By 1957 it had the largest press shop in the West of England engaged on commercial pressing.

The company finally closed in 2012.

EXPLORE​

It took me a while to find a way into the site, scrabbling through undergrowth and trying to find a gab in the fence; I finally found a nice easy way in. I was able to gain access to only one of the three buildings on the site; if the building I did get into is anything to go by, I suspect I'm not missing too much.

I'll be honest, I personally wouldn't rate the site massively high but, for me, it makes for a nice little mooch around if/when you're wanting something short & simplistic.

Yeah, it's not at all special looking nowadays unfortunately. The best bit for me personally was the 'Sound of Music' graffiti; I do like a good bit of graffiti.

Nice to see inside another building, I didn't bother climbing in that one as it was rather icy on my visit.

The main mill building was doable in January unless it's recently been sealed, few nice details but nothing spectacular, small room with some blueprints was probably best bit for me. Couple of phone shots as everything is still on my camera;

There were signs of recent activity on my visit, fresh tyre tracks in the snow, so somebody is checking on the site occasionally.
