Llanelli has long been a hub of industry for centuries now, and the town was dominated by many chimneys and works, constantly churning out new goods every day.
Old Castle Iron and Tinplate works operated for nearly a century, from 1866 to 1957. The second building of the works was created in the period of 1905-1913 and this is the only building that survives today. Along with only a smattering of other ruins, this is all that's left of a once booming industry. The manufacturing of tinplate at the works ceased in 1957, and the site saw some more use in the years following such as the storage of electronics and as a filming location. Most of the site was demolished in the early 2000s, leaving only the tinhouse.
As a Llanelli local, there's only a handful of places I've been able to explore around here and at the moment it's slim pickings. I've walked past this site many, many times and it's always been sealed up tight but an opportunity presented itself in the past week and my chance finally came to see inside a place I've wondered about for years. To be honest, there's not really much going on here unless you have a fascination with dead pigeons, but it was nice to finally tick this off the list.
From the outside
And now for the interior... well what's left of it anyway!
And finally, nice little surprise
