Purdown Anti Aircraft Battery

Bit of a lame "explore" this one but I was working a lot down that way last year (and frankly ran out of underground places to explore) so one evening decided to go for a run & ended up at this place.
Its completely open to the public & plastered with graff but was kinda a nice place to chill out tbh.

The history of this site began on Nov 11 1939, when it was occupied by mobile guns for the anti-aircraft defence of Bristol. In June 1940 it was converted into a permanent postion with two more postions being added later. The remains originally consisted of 4 octagonal gun postions with ammunition bays and crew shelters in concrete and brick earth blast mounds. At the centre rear of these was a complex containing command post and associated buildings, with 2 main magazines to the rear. These are in reinforced concrete.

Two later guns positions were in a square shape of reinforced concrete blocks. It was manned by 238 Battery of the 76th Royal Artillery Regiment in 1941, and by 515 Battery of the 150th Royal Artillery Regiment in 1942.

Bristol and Avonmouth were targets for the Luftwaffe and anti-aircraft defences were made to combat this. Purdown was one of the early fixed ones. During the war there were about 20 battery sites in existence, of which 8 around Bristol were fixed. Purdown was selected for scheduling because of its good state of preservation.

Love the report personally because back when I was a kid (goat pun not intended but appreciated) me and my mates convinced each of the PE teachers that we were in the other teacher's PE group, so neither teacher expected us to turn up. That meant we had all afternoon on a Wednesday off, so we just went up to Purdown and got baked. Those were the days!

It still seems like a hang out for every youth in the area tbh but had a good vibe to it with everyone just chillin & doing their own thing.
I like the way a place like this is open as a "public park" rather then being fenced off which is so often the case

there is some nice murals there.. & some complete rubbish lol

This might be one of the few places where some of the graffitti actually compliments the site, beautifully shot. The goats are pretty awesome to, we definetly don't get that down in London.
