Report - Pyle Lime Works - Bridgend - Dec 2018

Having been taken to this site by a photographer some months ago, I came back a little later down the line to photograph it myself but held off on posting it for some time, at the photographer's request. It was impossible to find any information on this place or why it closed but this lime works just outside of Bridgend used to be a hub of activity until one day, it quietly closed its gates and has lay abandoned ever since. My estimate is that the area has been abandoned for between 20-30 years now.

This was all I could find. The site has been quarried intermittently since the 1970’s. Historically it supplied silica sandstone to the steel industry for foundry casting for many years but this use has now ceased. In 2002, a new set of planning conditions was approved under the Mineral Review and these will control any future working to modern environmental standards. Whilst it is inactive, the quarry is still subject to a buffer zone to control any development in close proximity to it.

There's a lot of similar holes around Bridgend though, so it should have a proper name and rough date of your visit in the title please.

Pyle limeworks is the correct name. It’s a good site and I’m amazed they haven’t scrapped all the metal here, it’s been like that for years. There are 2 kilns hidden in the trees on the way in which most people miss.

Great pictures.. Agree with Lenston about all the scrap iron. As I have commented before, does some better informed member know why sites are not cleared of metal sooner? Is it one of the following reasons:

Not worth it financially
Dispute over who actually owns the stuff
Waiting for scrap prices to improve - some sort of investment
Access problems with stuff built around the site blocking access

Any other suggestions (not telling me to ???? ??)

At £60 a tonne for steel even Mr Pike and his Pikelets don't think it's worth the effort.

Owners have blocked off the road in so I think that’s more the issue.

I would've thought it was down to the cost effectiveness more than anything and the site definitely isn't accessible by road any more

Admittedly I avoid posting place names where I can in order to help keep the location a bit more secure and have been advised on other urbex sites to never reveal the date of my visit in case it comes back to haunt you. Having said that, I am new to the site so maybe the rules are different here.

The rules are different yes, you do have to post the actual name of the site here and a month is enough for the date
