Cracking set of reports there, covered the whole place nicely. We walked right past the coke works on our way to the blast furnace, that railway line is handy ;-) . From what I understand they had pretty much run out of fuel to run anything right at the end, so a gradual cool down of the works was never an option, I don't think they had much choice but to just switch it all off and the resulting damage was inevitable.
