A few weeks ago we posted a couple of shots of Brindle ROC post after bumping into a nice chap from a group currently restoring the post. The progress they have made so far is impressive. We've since joined the restoration group and started volunteering a few hours a week to help bring it back to life, our thinking being what better way to learn more about these posts and eventually see one in full working order. We thought some people on here might like to see the progress over time as the post comes back to life, so with that in mind we're starting this thread to show the progress the group has made so far and as a place to post updates every so often as the restoration progresses for anyone who is interested. These are a mixture of old shots by the guys in the group and recent shots we have taken since getting involved so shots are of varying quality.

Surface features restoration.

When work started a couple of years ago there was significant damage to a lot of the above ground features. The step had also been smashed off and thrown down the hatch.

Restoration inside the post.

Below ground the post was flooded, burnt out and full of rubbish.

Progress so far inside the post.

We joined the project just as the new wall insulation was being fitted pre painting.

We'd never seen a ground zero indicator before. Its essentially a pinhole camera with 4 holes corresponding to the compass points. Inside is photographic film, in the event of a blast the light from the blast will expose the film indicating the direction of the blast on the grid. Inside the indicator below.

Hand operated siren.

Again we had never seen one of these up close. It's unbelievably loud when it's going off.

That's all so far. We'll update this post once some more progress has been made.

Thanks for looking.

That's a massive job to get it from an arsoned state. I used to live walking distance from one that was in quite good condition, just void of furnishings. I tried to tart it up but never got round to rehoming a bunk bed frame for it before I moved. Feel lazy now

That’s a good effort so far. Thanks for the update. I remember visiting the one in Skipsea before and after it had been restored. Mad how much time and effort these things require but definitely worth it in the end. Thumbs up from me.

Wow interesting stuff. Makes a change from the rather sorry or filled in state they are usually in!

Remember, never leave any of that stuff in the post. If people even suspect there's a BPI in there, it'll be raided. Where did you even get a BPI from nowadays?
The chap running the restoration project has been building up all the kit over a few years but it's only brought to the post on open days and not left there same for the ground zero indicator, I believe bpi's are quite valuable? The post is secured and has cameras well. Was great to see a bpi up close tbh. Not sure were he sourced it from.

BPIs and GZIs go for well over four figure sums

Guess that's why you never see them anywhere!
In most cases the posts were stripped on decommission in 90s (the ones that remained). 15-20 years ago you’d see reports with Teletalks still in them but I can only recall 1-2 that had BPIs left behind. Don’t think any had gzi’s left behind so very rare and sought after albeit a limited/specialist market

It’s great that you can both be involved in this. That BPI is lovely as well. If I remember rightly RAF West Raynham had one, maybe two on the roof of the station HQ. I think my mate managed to purchase one.

Most BPIs and GZIs were returned to central stores and scraped. Some were sold and a handful turned up in NI a few years back in an old army store.
