PRE WAR - CONVALESENT HOUSE HOSPITAL, NESS ROAD SHOEBURYNESS
The Old Mental Hospital "EXPLORED"
This building had several different medical purposes over the years..
The former hospital ,originally built as a pre-war convalescent home, was last used for non-residential specialist health care until 2013. In June 2018, a planning application was submitted to Southend Council in a bid to demolish the derelict site and replace it with ten new homes. In August 2018 seven fire crews tackled a blaze here caused by arsonists damaging 50% of the building's roof and the floors below. The fire which tore through the derelict hospital has been recorded as deliberate.
The blaze, which began at around 4.30pm 23rd August 2018 caused damage to approximately 50% of the building's roof as well as the floors below. A total of eight crews attended the blaze. Specialist units included a water bowser from Corringham and an aerial ladder platform from Chelmsford. The flames had been brought under control by 6pm. Much of the roof had been destroyed and several floors below had suffered structual fire damage. Police remained on scene until 11.50pm and enquiries were ongoing.
The planning application for demolision has since been given the go ahead
The NHS sees the site as surplus to its needs...
I have more pictures to add and will add them shortly...
