Southsea Castle was built in 1544 to protect the solent and portsmouth harbour from the french
it was a live military site until the 1960's and is now open to the public free of charge
it has probably 30 or 40 different guns from different time periods outside and atop the castle walls.
castle from the prom
now I won't bore you with pics of all the guns
instead I'll bore you with a selection of them
you can enter the tunnels that go round both the inside and outside of the dry moat
but do watch out as they are damp with headroom going to around 5 feet in places with no warning
the roof if deteriorating and is bloody sharp too. (I cut my feckin head) here
finally get to end of tunnel to find a grating. feck need to go all the way back again. still nice view through grating
tried to get to roof but was thwarted by stairs to nowhere
nearby were these tanks
and a big feckin gun
