Yeah the whole system is quite odd. I'm confused about the place as a lot of things don't really add up, for example the syphons and the smaller plastic pipes which both take flow off the brook, why not just one or the other? Maybe there only used to be syphons but the other intercepting pipes were added later for increased flow? As well as the flow preventer plates, I'm not sure what they are but I think from what the signs are implying that what ever they are is to be closed or placed at the syphons when workers are down there maybe if the brook outside starts to rise. Also with the fact it says "sewer" on the signs, when we first found the signs on our earlier visits we were thinking that maybe the system used to be a combined sewer but in later years the sewers were made separate and the place became a storm drain. But once we found the syphons and pipes which connect to the brook that idea was out the window. I now think it possibly says sewer on the signs in short for surface water sewer or in reference as to the fact the place is "similar" to a sewer for people / workers gaining entry through the manholes. The place is really confusing and the longer I spend on maps and trying to research it the more wild it gets lol, I'm probably going to revisit sometime to have a better look. I was also thinking I could lower a GoPro down into the syphon to see exactly what's inside. Also we will probably go further into that other pipe from the junction chamber to see where it leads to, maybe that pipe connects with another interceptor for the brook a lot further upstream?! If we do and we find more, I will update you and possibly put some more pics up.It is definitely a strange setup, and unlike nothing I have seen around there. How did you get that pic of the syphon chamber? And what are the preventer plates, are they those two metal things that seem to slide down, or the things below? Some kind of non return valve maybe? Forgive my questions, as it is one of those places that is quite interesting. It mentions sewer on those signs, so am wondering if you were in an actual sewer or they meant to put culvert or storm drain on the sign, unless there is access to the sewers from inside there somehow? Googled but cannot find much, either way, great report again!!!
