History
The castle was built in 1566 for Sir Alexander Forrester, and was the seat of Clan Forrester.
It now lies pretty badly ruined, and is undergoing a slow restoration by the Torwood Castle Trust.
It’s a gorgeous example of a 16th Century Scottish baronial style castle, and much of the upper levels is still accessible via restored staircases.
Report
It is easily accessible from a public footpath, and definitely has an impressive and foreboding presence upon approach.
The lower level is cloaked in darkness due to poor window placement. Some rooms are littered with random objects and debris from years of dumping and accumulation, and other rooms show signs of recent maintenance work,
There were used tealights left over from previous urbexers, so of course we lit them up again
The upper level is mostly open plan as the interior walls are completely gone.
Clear signs of restoration can be seen in various parts of the castle.
All in all this was a surprisingly sprawling little mooch. With more twists and turns than we had expected, and the views from the top levels are rather nice.
