I forgot to mention this in the report, but if anyone decides to visit PLEASE do take the precautions. I know other reports and members said it isn’t too bad but you can never know. I don’t know how to post videos here, but I did get a video of walking in water after the filtering galleries and with every step, a lot of white stuff came off my boots and pants.
Please do take it easy and be smart if you visit, I know I was a twat with the bags but even then I took measures after. If you visit, take it easy and stay safe :D

That’s the best way to protect you I’d say, less stuff for the fibres to hold on to 😁
Yeah and vest and shorts as well. I wonder if the place is actually any worse than any other old building stuffed with asbestos. I always thought if you disturbed it too much is when it's bad for you. The blue as estos was always really bad.

To be fair most of the place was perfectly fine, big open spaces with broken windows and roofs, anything there will be long blown away or sunk into the paint on the ground
It’s just those filtering galleries that stir issues, especially as some of those bags as pictures just have clumps of fibres in it, especially as it’s almost completely sealed with intact roof and windows, it all just settled onto the ground, as I showed in that last photo it all just came off my boots in the water which was grim

Same old comments.

The place stopped making asbestos products years ago. The fibres in the bag are synthetic and kevlar fibres.

Digging a hole in the frosty woods may cause you problems, but the filter room is fine.

Some simple research on the history of the site will tell you more.

Amazing report, and thankyou for so many wonderful reference shots (I make scale models as a hobby, and I love making derelict/run down factory dioramas for some of the modern/scifi stuff) but I am going to have to echo the herd here and say that asbestos is really not nice, I would not have worn anything less than a fully sealed hazmat suit in there, and the respirator would have been on at all times. Still, you did good on decontaminating, I am assuming that all your clothes went in the bin? If you do something like this again then bring some large bottles of water and prepare a decontamination area before hand.
It was a great report, even with all of that in mind, and the site is amazing, though I wont be visiting any time soon.

Actually, I am pretty sure thats asbestos. I have had some unfortunate run-ins with it in the past and that looks like asbestos fibre in the bags. The waste bags certainly do contain asbestos, and there is also a lot documented in and around the site - the river that runs past is contaminated and got a massive dose a while back when a retaining wall collapsed and spilled part of a waste heap into it.

This is a really solid report! I did this place myself back in April but everything was wet and slippery which hindered us moving around the site, plus security were particularly active on that day and actually chased us off at the end 😬 I would've loved to have seen more of the filters and labs etc - I am a particular fan of anything scientific! 🧪⚗️🏭

A great report i went a few times many years ago now and the place was full of scrap men and women. Sorry to hear about the records room i spent hours in there rummaging about one of the best archive rooms ive been in. Must admit i had forgotten about it so nice to see a decent report on the current state of things.

Thank you! And I appreciate the concern but we did a lot of research on how to defend myself. Obviously I wasn’t perfect but with my resources I did quite well, and if I visit again I’ll be bringing coveralls
Anywhere that had a larger chance on fibres, I had my hood up, then the respirator over it or the other way around with the straps closing it off to keep my hair mainly covered. After we finished, I headed to the nearest toilet after wrapping up and binning my hoodie to wash my forearms, ankles and head just in case. I did also have water bottles that I poured on my boots and scrubbed off just in case I was tracking anything else. If you know how to stay safe, id actually recommend it as it’s a hell of a wander!
To be fair i didnt get a photo of it, but in the longer, darker room, all the filters had the words ‘asbestos filters’ marked on the side, whereas the more open side was marked with ‘Kevlar filters’ so I’d believe what the machines and the bags are telling me, so you’re pretty right there :D

Do get there if you can, it’s quite lovely! It was very rainy and wet when we went but if anything that would’ve been better against fibres as it would’ve been less likely to be disturbed (if I’m wrong there do let me know?)
But the labs are lovely. If you plan on visiting and don’t know the way about, drop me a message and I can try make a map for you
