A great report i went a few times many years ago now and the place was full of scrap men and women. Sorry to hear about the records room i spent hours in there rummaging about one of the best archive rooms ive been in. Must admit i had forgotten about it so nice to see a decent report on the current state of things.

You could definitely tell some parts were incredibly bare and stripped, and it’s heartbreaking to see the records room as that’s pretty much why we went as my mate adores old papers. Funnily enough we were told by secca that it was all completely gone, but we still went HOPING something was left at least

Quite enjoyed watching the cottage industry that was thriving shortly after full closure! It was swarming with locals chopping up anything non-ferrous!

Thank you! And I appreciate the concern but we did a lot of research on how to defend myself. Obviously I wasn’t perfect but with my resources I did quite well, and if I visit again I’ll be bringing coveralls
Anywhere that had a larger chance on fibres, I had my hood up, then the respirator over it or the other way around with the straps closing it off to keep my hair mainly covered. After we finished, I headed to the nearest toilet after wrapping up and binning my hoodie to wash my forearms, ankles and head just in case. I did also have water bottles that I poured on my boots and scrubbed off just in case I was tracking anything else. If you know how to stay safe, id actually recommend it as it’s a hell of a wander!
To be fair i didnt get a photo of it, but in the longer, darker room, all the filters had the words ‘asbestos filters’ marked on the side, whereas the more open side was marked with ‘Kevlar filters’ so I’d believe what the machines and the bags are telling me, so you’re pretty right there

Ah, one thing, the mask should go under the hood. You put the mask on, it forms a seal around your face, the you pull the hood up over the mask and draw it tight over that, otherwise it doesnt seal properly, but you should be fine.

Do get there if you can, it’s quite lovely! It was very rainy and wet when we went but if anything that would’ve been better against fibres as it would’ve been less likely to be disturbed (if I’m wrong there do let me know?)

Actually, going back to Report - - Turner Brothers Asbestos, Rochdale - July 22 | Industrial Sites from 2 years back, it looks like someone has made an effort to tidy the filter room up, in that old report the asbestos is strewn all over, but in yours its mostly in one corner.

Ah, one thing, the mask should go under the hood. You put the mask on, it forms a seal around your face, the you pull the hood up over the mask and draw it tight over that, otherwise it doesnt seal properly, but you should be fine.


You are 100% correct there, even a high humidity after a heavy mist/fog can severely deplete the number of fibres in the air. Actually, the advice for builders or other people digging whom hit buried asbestos is to wet the ground and keep it wet until specialists can get there.

I’m glad I took the right precautions there with the rain, we waited for the storms that day so that the ground would be soaked, the only area that was dry was the upper floors where the galleries were.

And you’re right there, it was very clean to what I remember seeing online, plus the orange waste bags were put in a pile too so I’m guessing they’ve had a cleanup?

To be fair when i spoke to secca, he said kids at the high school were trying to get in all the time not only after school but before, meaning if they get it God knows what they’ll drag around the public areas. Doing so could just be a measure to at least protect them I’d think
